Franchise FAQ
Thistledown Attic Insulation is part of the Cedarwell family of independently owned insulation companies. We’re looking for operators who want to build something real in their own community, backed by systems that have worked since 2003. Here’s what prospective owners ask us most.
Common Questions
Do I need insulation experience to open a Thistledown franchise?
No. Most of our owners came from outside the trades. What matters more is that you’re comfortable hiring and leading technicians, and that you genuinely care how a family feels when your crew leaves their home. We’ve built the technical training. You bring the willingness to run a business where shoe covers and drop cloths are non-negotiable, and where a written price goes into every customer’s hand before any work starts.
What is the total investment range to open a Thistledown location?
Total investment typically runs between $85,000 and $175,000 depending on your market, whether you lease or buy equipment initially, and how you handle your first vehicle fleet. That range covers your franchise fee, initial inventory from our eight brand lines, training, and the working capital you’ll need for your first three to six months of operation. We give you a written breakdown of every line item before you commit, the same way we give every homeowner a written price before any work starts.
Is financing available for the startup costs?
Yes. We maintain relationships with third-party lenders who understand the Cedarwell model and have financed our owners before. Some owners also use SBA-backed loans or bring in a working partner. We don’t handle the financing ourselves, and we won’t push you toward any particular path. What we will do is introduce you to the people who have funded our operators successfully, so you can compare terms and choose what fits your situation.
How is territory defined, and is it exclusive?
Your territory is defined by zip code clusters and population density, not arbitrary lines on a map. It’s exclusive to you. We don’t sell overlapping territories, and we don’t allow another Cedarwell company to market inside your protected area. That exclusivity matters because Thistledown builds its reputation neighborhood by neighborhood. A crew that cleans up like it’s their own home in one zip code earns referrals that stay in your territory.
How long is the initial training program?
Three weeks. Two weeks at our headquarters covering sales, operations, the Cedarwell Care Promise, and product knowledge across all eight of our insulation brands, Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber. The third week is in the field, riding with an operating owner, watching how they handle the hard conversations, the callbacks, the jobs where something goes sideways and you have to make it right. We don’t rush this. The 365-Day Done Right Promise only works if you understand what “done right” actually looks like on a hot afternoon in someone’s attic.
What ongoing fees or royalties should I expect?
There is a monthly royalty based on gross revenue, plus a modest marketing fund contribution that supports the shared brand assets and lead generation systems you’ll use. We don’t hide these numbers behind a discovery-day sales pitch. The exact percentages are disclosed in our Franchise Disclosure Document, which you’ll receive at the appropriate stage. What we can say here is that our owners consistently tell us the fees feel reasonable because the support shows up when they need it, not just when the invoice is due.
How long does it take to open my doors?
Most owners open for business between 60 and 90 days after signing. That timeline depends on how quickly you secure your vehicle wrap, pass background checks for your initial technicians, and complete training. We’ve had eager operators move faster and careful operators take longer to find the right warehouse space. Either way, a live person answers your call 24/7 throughout the process, so you’re never waiting until Monday for a callback when you have a permitting question on a Saturday morning.
What support do you provide after I’m open?
Field support visits, a dedicated operations coach, group calls with other owners, and a shared technology platform that handles scheduling, pricing, and customer follow-up. When you hit a problem you haven’t seen before, you can reach someone who has. We also handle the product relationships with all eight manufacturers, so you get competitive pricing and pet-safe options to offer families without negotiating your own supply agreements. The Cedarwell Care Promise isn’t just for homeowners. It’s how we treat our owners too. Ask before we move or touch anything means we don’t change your operations without explaining why.
What does the ideal Thistledown owner look like?
Someone who gets anxious at the thought of a crew tracking mud through a customer’s living room. Someone who would rather explain a $2,400 attic job slowly and clearly than rush to the next appointment. Someone who wants to build a local business their neighbors recognize and trust, not a logo they slapped on a van. Our best owners are 30 to 50, often with kids or pets of their own, and they chose Thistledown because the values matched what they already believed about how people deserve to be treated in their homes.
What’s the next step if I’m interested?
Call us at (909) 768-6501. A live person will answer, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No voicemail tree. We’ll send you a brief questionnaire to make sure we’re a mutual fit, then schedule a conversation where you can ask the hard questions and we’ll give you direct answers. If it makes sense for both sides, we’ll invite you to spend a day with an operating owner, watching the work, seeing the clean-up photo they send before leaving every job, and deciding if this is the kind of business you want to build in your own community.
Still Have Questions?
We’re happy to talk through whatever’s on your mind. Call (909) 768-6501 anytime, day or night, and a live person will pick up. Or submit the form below and we’ll call you back within one business day, though most people hear from us within the hour. Thistledown is the soft fluff of the thistle, one of nature’s lightest insulators. We built this company to bring that same care to every attic we touch, and we’re looking for owners who want to do the same where they live.
