Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most homeowners call us with the same handful of questions: what will this cost, who is coming into my house, will the baby’s room be safe, and how long will the floors be covered. We’ve gathered the answers here in one place. Thistledown Attic Insulation has been part of the Cedarwell family since 2003, led by owner Neil Barron, and we’ve learned that a clear answer up front saves everyone a phone call later.

Pricing & Estimates

How much does attic insulation cost in Los Angeles?

Attic insulation in Los Angeles typically runs $1,800 to $4,200 for a standard 1,200 to 1,800 square foot home, with most blown-in fiberglass and cellulose jobs landing between $2,100 and $3,300. Spray foam costs more because the material and application are different: closed-cell spray foam on an 1,100 square foot attic floor usually falls in the $4,800 to $7,500 range depending on depth and how much prep the space needs. The number that matters isn’t a range on a website. It’s the written price you get before we touch a rafter. Call (909) 768-6501 and we’ll walk the attic, measure, and put your exact number in writing.

What does the cost include?

Every written price includes removal of old or compacted material where needed, air sealing around penetrations, the insulation itself, and full clean-up inside your home. Here’s what shows up as line items on a typical Los Angeles attic quote:

  • Old insulation removal and disposal: $400 to $900
  • Air sealing around recessed lights, top plates, and plumbing chases: $350 to $700
  • Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose to R-38 to R-49: $1,100 to $2,200
  • Baffles at the eaves to keep ventilation clear: $150 to $350
  • Attic hatch insulation and weatherstripping: $125 to $275

That’s the bulk of it. We don’t add a separate “clean-up fee” or a “disposal surcharge” after the fact. Shoe covers, drop cloths, and the photo of the finished clean-up are part of the job, not upgrades.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Estimates are free, and they come with an actual walk-through of your attic rather than a phone guess. We climb up, check the current R-value, look for moisture or pest evidence, and note anything that would change the price. By the time we leave, you have a written number and a clear explanation of what’s driving it. Nothing starts until you’ve seen that number and agreed to it. Call (909) 768-6501 to set a time.

Is it cheaper to add insulation or replace it entirely?

Adding insulation on top of clean, dry, intact material is almost always cheaper. Replacing makes sense when the existing insulation is wet, compacted to less than half its original depth, or contaminated with rodent droppings or mold. In those cases, blowing new material over the top just traps the problem underneath. A quick attic inspection tells us which situation you’re in. If it’s a clean add-on, the price typically drops by $400 to $900 versus a full removal and reinstall.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

We don’t offer in-house financing, but we accept several standard payment methods. You can pay by major credit card, debit card, check, or ACH bank transfer. Payment is due after the job is complete and you’ve had a chance to inspect the work. We don’t ask for a deposit before the crew arrives.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit cards, debit cards, checks, and ACH transfers. There’s no surcharge for card payments, and we don’t require a cash discount arrangement. Your written price is your price. If you need a receipt for insurance, tax, or rebate paperwork, just ask and we’ll email a detailed copy the same day.

Service & Scheduling

Do you offer emergency insulation service?

We answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so if you’ve got water pouring through a ceiling after a pipe leak or a raccoon has torn through your attic insulation overnight, you can reach a live person at any hour. True same-night insulation installation is rare because material and crew scheduling don’t work that way, but we can often set eyes on the attic the next business morning and get a temporary containment plan in place if water or animals are involved. If you’re not sure whether it’s urgent, call and describe what you’re seeing. The person who answers will tell you honestly.

How fast can you respond?

Most Los Angeles-area requests get a return call within a few hours, and inspections usually happen within one to three business days. Once you approve the written price, installs are typically scheduled within a week to ten days, and many are done sooner. If you’re in an active leak situation or have animals in the attic, tell the person on the phone and we’ll move you up the list.

How long does an insulation job take?

Most attic insulation projects finish in a single day, usually four to seven hours. A straight blown-in job on an empty, accessible attic can wrap in three or four hours. A full removal plus air sealing plus spray foam on a cluttered attic with a tight hatch can run into a second day. We’ll tell you upfront which one you’re looking at so you can plan the household around it.

Do I need to be home during the work?

You don’t have to be home the whole time, but we ask that someone be reachable and that we do a quick walkthrough before the crew starts. The attic space itself is separate from your living areas, so you can move through the house normally. We do ask that pets be kept out of hallways and rooms directly under the attic hatch while we’re moving materials, mostly so nobody trips and nobody bolts out the door.

Licensing & Trust

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Thistledown Attic Insulation is a licensed and insured insulation contractor operating as part of the Cedarwell family. We carry general liability and workers’ compensation coverage on every crew member, and we’re happy to show documentation before work begins. Every technician who enters your home is background-checked, wears a uniform, and arrives in a marked vehicle, so you know exactly who is walking through your door.

Who will be in my home?

Background-checked, uniformed technicians, and a crew lead who introduces himself at the door and stays for the entire job. Nobody subcontracted, nobody showing up unannounced. If you have a newborn, a napping toddler, or a skittish dog, tell the crew lead at the door and they’ll coordinate the quieter parts of the job around it.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes, with the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something isn’t right within a year of the install, we come back and make it right, no debate and no fine print. That covers settling, gaps at the eaves, hatch drafts, and anything else tied to how we installed the material. It’s a standard part of every job, not an add-on.

Do you clean up after the work?

Yes, and we treat the clean-up as part of the job, not a favor. Drop cloths go down before the first step into the hallway. Shoe covers go on at the front door. When we’re done, we vacuum the path from the attic hatch to the exterior door and take a photo of the clean area before the van pulls away. You’ll get that photo the same day. If anything doesn’t match, call and we’ll come back.

What is the Cedarwell Care Promise?

The Cedarwell Care Promise is the set of standards every Cedarwell-family company follows on every visit. It’s four things, in order: clean up like it’s our own home, ask before we move or touch anything, respect the family’s time and quiet hours, and explain the price before the work. Thistledown operates under those standards on every job in Los Angeles, and they’re the reason customers tell us the attic work felt less disruptive than they expected.

Why is the company called Thistledown?

Thistledown is the soft fluff of the thistle, one of nature’s lightest insulators. The name is a promise about how carefully we work. It’s also a useful reminder of the whole point: air trapped in the right material, in the right place, is what keeps a house comfortable.

Attic Insulation Services

Do you handle attic insulation?

Yes, attic insulation is what we do most. We install blown-in fiberglass, cellulose, and mineral wool, plus spray foam, and we match the product to your attic instead of selling one material for every house. A low, hot Los Angeles attic with radiant heat load and a lot of can lights often wants a different approach than an older home with an unsealed top plate and a shallow joist bay. We use Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber, so the right product is usually already on our truck. You can read more about our Attic Insulation in Los Angeles on the main service page.

Do you handle blown-in insulation?

Yes. Blown-in fiberglass and cellulose are the workhorses of attic insulation in Los Angeles. We install GreenFiber cellulose and Owens Corning fiberglass to R-38 or R-49 depending on your joist depth and existing material. It takes a crew about four hours to cover a typical 1,200 square foot attic to depth, and we use a depth marker at every ten feet so you can see the number from the hatch when we’re done.

Do you handle spray foam insulation?

Yes, both open-cell and closed-cell spray foam. We install Icynene and Demilec spray foam products. Closed-cell is what we typically use on attic floors over vented crawl spaces or in areas with moisture concerns, and it also adds structural rigidity. Open-cell is a better fit where you want a slightly softer material and a lower price point. Spray foam is a bigger investment than blown-in, and we’ll explain honestly which attics actually benefit from it and which don’t.

Do you handle crawl space encapsulation & vapor barrier?

Yes. Crawl space encapsulation with a sealed vapor barrier is a common companion to attic work, because moisture that starts low in the house often ends up as a humidity and air quality problem up top. We install reinforced 10- to 20-mil vapor barrier, seal the perimeter to the foundation wall, and where crawl space sealing is part of the scope, we insulate the walls with rigid foam or spray foam as appropriate. If your house has a vented crawl space and you’ve been seeing musty smells or high humidity, that’s worth a look.

Do you handle insulation removal?

Yes. We remove old, wet, compacted, or pest-contaminated insulation. We use HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment to keep dust from traveling into the living space, and we bag and haul everything out the same day. If the removal reveals rodent damage, mold, or active moisture, we’ll stop, show you photos, and talk through options before moving on to the new material.

Do you offer pet-safe insulation options?

Yes. Where a choice exists, we steer toward pet-safe products, because the dog and the cat live in the house too. Blown-in fiberglass, mineral wool, and cellulose are generally the safer options when animals share the space. Spray foam must fully cure before pets are allowed back in the attic, and we’ll tell you the exact cure window before we leave. If you’re a pet household, mention it when you call and we’ll factor that into the product selection.

What R-value do I need in Los Angeles?

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-30 to R-60 for attics in our climate zone, and most Los Angeles homes we inspect are sitting at R-11 to R-19. Practically speaking, we aim for R-38 to R-49 in most attics. Going higher than R-49 gives diminishing returns in our climate; the bigger gains usually come from air sealing before you add any insulation at all.

What to Expect During the Job

Here’s the simple version of how a Thistledown install runs from the moment you call to the moment the van pulls away.

  1. Phone call and scheduling. You reach a live person 24/7 at (909) 768-6501, and we set an inspection time that works around your household.
  2. Attic walkthrough and written price. We climb up, measure, check for moisture or pests, and hand you a written price before anything starts.
  3. Prep and protection. Drop cloths along the hallway, shoe covers at the door, and a conversation about quiet hours if anyone is napping.
  4. The install. Air sealing first, then baffles, then insulation to depth, with the crew lead on site the whole time.
  5. Clean-up and photo. We vacuum the path, remove all debris, and photograph the clean area before we leave.
  6. 365-Day Done Right Promise begins. If anything isn’t right in the next year, we come back and fix it.
